Harris County has seen electric rates rise along with natural gas and a barrel of oil now approaching $102. The energy sector keeps going up and with it Houston electric rates. Residential electric rates in Houston are still at their low levels prior to what has been happening in the energy sector but they could soon be heading up a little higher if energy continues to spike up. If you are a commercial energy user in Houston or a home owner needing residential Houston electricity then you should go ahead and lock in for some type of monthly term rate. The most popular electric rate terms are for 6 months, 12 months and 24 months. At this time you may have discovered that a 24 month electric rate is a little cheaper then the other fixed rate terms in Houston. The reason the 24 month term is a little cheaper is because Texas electric rates correlate very closely with natural gas futures contracts. A 24 month natural gas contract is cheaper then a 12 month contract which is why you will pay less for 24 months then you would for 12 months. This however is not always the case a Houston business may receive a quote 6 months from now that shows a 12 month contract being at a lower price then a 24 month electric rate. It all depends on what the energy commodities market is doing as far as what you will end up paying more for.
If you are wanting to get on something for the short term to wait out the spike in the energy market I would suggest signing up on a 6 month electric contract. The 6 month rate is a little cheaper then the 12 month electric rate and you can try again for the 12 month fixed electric rates when prices hopefully come back down. Keep in mind that the Houston Texas energy market is the same as speculating on any number of other markets. There is really no way of predicting just when prices will come back down. It could be a very long while before we see a price drop with Houston electric rates.
If you need to sign up for a Houston residential electric rate with Affordable Energy then I would recommend the 12 month rate. This way you will not have to fool with watching the market and signing up again for a year. Hopefully the market will look better next year because right now you are stuck signing up on a high rate like everyone else. Be sure to mark it on your calendar when the Affordable energy contract is up so you can sign back up on a fixed rate term. It is important that you sign up on some type of fixed rate product before the end of your Houston electric rate contract or you will be put on a fluctuating market rate.
